What is marble and what are its uses

Comment

What is marble?

Marble is one of the most widely used and beautiful metamorphic rocks that is obtained from limestone and during geological processes in the oldest parts of the earth's crust. And it loses its fossils, its texture changes and it turns into marble.
Residual impurities in limestone affect the mineral composition and color of marble, and this stone is found in different colors due to the minerals in it, including clay, sand, gravel and silt. Mineral composition in different marbles, the main composition of all marbles is calcite - a mineral composed of calcium carbonate - and other components include dolomite and aragonite crystals. Marble stone with crystalline structure It is strong and has low porosity or permeability. The low porosity of this stone has made it less exposed to water damage during the performed processes. This stone is well polished and transparency and radiance are the main reasons for its wide applications in construction applications and It is sculptural. Not to mention that marble is very sensitive to acidic substances due to its calcium carbonate and dissolves quickly in some acids. Also, natural factors such as air temperature, snow, rain, wind, weather and air pollutants may affect the appearance and structural durability of this rock. Although this stone has long been used in exterior and interior applications, but today, due to modern environmental pollution, sometimes polishing or polishing on marble in exterior applications does not have the durability and durability of the past.

Marble color

Marble can be found in various colors. The purest marble obtained from limestone is white, while the impurity of iron oxide in limestone can change its color to yellow, orange, pink or red. Clay minerals turn marble to gray They change and the abundant bitumen in the limestone causes the gray to darken to black. Marble containing stone snake or serpentine is also usually found in green. It is interesting to know that in ancient times, just by looking at the color of marble, they could identify where a piece of marble belongs.

What are the uses of marble?

Marble has many unique properties that have made it a valuable stone in various industries, including the applications of this beautiful stone can be mentioned as follows:

1. Construction, interior and exterior design of houses

Marble has long been known as the stone of gods and kings and has been used extensively in the construction of ancient monuments.

For example, this stone is used in the construction of the Taj Mahal, which is one of the most beautiful and famous historical buildings and can be seen throughout the building, including its marble domes and towers.
Because marble is easily available, it has a beautiful, clear and polished appearance, and due to its calcite, it is easier to split than limestone. Today, it is still used as one of the decorative and filling building materials in the project. It is used in building materials such as interior and exterior walls of houses, floor coverings, decorations, stairs and paving.

2. Sculpture

The feature of transparency, radiance and gloss of marble has been used a lot in sculpture. This feature, along with features such as smoothness and easy cutting, has made marble one of the best stones for sculpture, because when well cut, it looks uniform and uniform in all directions.

Some of the most famous sculptures in the world are made of marble, including the statue of Artemis, the Greek goddess.

3. Agriculture and soil improvement

Marble, like limestone, is converted to calcium oxide by heating in a kiln, also called lime. This compound is used in agriculture to improve and reduce soil acidity.

Combining lime with chemical fertilizers is useful to increase soil and crop yields.

4. Decolorizer

White marble is used to produce a decolorizing product in the form of white powder, which is often used as a brightener, filler and pigment in the paper, paint and other industries.

5. Neutralization of acids

As we said before, marble is made of calcium carbonate, which is very effective in neutralizing acids, so crush the marble and use the resulting powder to neutralize acids, including acid in the soil, water streams and Also used in the chemical industry.

6. Pharmacy

Due to the acid-neutralizing properties of marble, marble with the highest degree of purity is used after processing and removal of impurities to make medicinal products such as Alka Seltzer - a drug used to treat acid-induced indigestion.

7. Livestock supplements

Marble powder is soft, soluble and rich in calcium and is used to produce calcium supplements in animal feed, including cattle and chickens.

8. Cemeteries

Marble is one of the most common uses in the construction of tombstones because it is very easy to cut and engrave on marbles.
