What is travertine?

Travertine is a limestone that is formed from the activity of hot springs. Properties of travertine are between limestone and marble, which are also found naturally near springs, caves and.. The release of carbon dioxide during the deposition and formation of this rock causes the formation of spongy surfaces and cavities on the surface of travertine. The presence of air bubbles and impurities of iron, silica, manganese, organic matter and… causes a variety of colors such as white, cream, chocolate, gray, red, yellow and… in various travertine ores.

Appearance:

Travertine has a porous texture and various colors and stripes, the color variation of which is due to differences in the compounds that are present at the time of deposition in the rock elements and manifest themselves in the form of different veins. It should be noted that because these veins have a different chemical composition from the rock background, they have less strength in the created rock and form the critical point of a rock that shows the least resistance to impact or pressure, and whatever rock has veins It has less impurities and has higher strength. Most travertine stones have low abrasion resistance so they are easy to process but have good compressive strength (their compressive strength is higher than marble and less than granite) but its high strength and porosity in working conditions. Provides saturated environment and height. The maximum and minimum physical requirements of travertine are available in ASTM C1527 or 13247 national standard of Iran.

Types of travertine stones:

The following is a list of available building travertine stones. Click on it to check each stone separately, some links may not be active due to updates!

Yellow travertine Walnut travertine Abyaneh Travertine
Zanjan cream travertine Travertine methods Thick travertine
Kazan White Travertine Yazd cream travertine Abbasabad travertine

Advantages and Disadvantages:

Due to its porosity, travertine has thermal and acoustic insulation properties, and the holes in travertine stone increase its fire resistance. Travertine has an acceptable strength. This stone can be cut into 2 shapes with and without waves. Travertine has holes and cavities that must be filled when processing the surface. The presence of a hole in the travertine causes cement mortar to penetrate into the holes when installing the stone and prevent the stone from falling. The lower specific gravity of this stone compared to some other types is significant in order to help the lower weight of the building and the loads on its skeleton. Travertine stone has high polishing properties (especially Abbasabad and Hajiabad travertine) so it creates high luster It is also more capable of being used in volumetric views. Travertine is used in Roman facades, which can achieve the required types of volumes.

One of the disadvantages of this stone is its relatively high water absorption. This shortcoming was almost covered by the development of processing technology. The coating material and the so-called resin during the processing and polishing of the stone, reduces its water absorption and one of its effects is that the stone gets dirty later and is less exposed to weathering; Therefore, the quality of subvarzin is remarkable in its durability and beauty for a long time. In ancient times, due to its porous appearance, consumers were reluctant to use travertine, and travertine was one of the cheapest stones until the growth of technology and the use of resin fillers, resulting in a glossy surface treatment with a beautiful appearance and properties. Be suitable mechanically and chemically. The addition of the resin stage caused a big leap in the volume of extraction and processing of travertine.

Uses:

Travertines are suitable for interior and exterior facades of buildings due to their very high porosity. This porosity allows cement slurry to penetrate into these spaces and act as a natural scope. Travertines can be used even in very cold areas and with Heavy rain also worked on the facade of the building without worrying about dropping stones. In the interior, this stone can also be used for the following users: wall frame, stair side stone and…
